The template editor

Templates are where developers set up the design your team builds from. You need the Developer, Admin or Owner role to edit and publish templates. Marketers can open templates to read them but can’t change them, and Viewers don’t see them at all.

Go to Templates in the sidebar to see every template in the workspace, with a thumbnail of its header, first two modules and footer.

  • New template creates a template with a minimal header and footer and no modules.
  • Filter narrows the list by publish state: Published or Not published.
  • Search (or press /) finds templates by name.
  • Display switches what cards show and whether archived templates are mixed in.

Each card’s menu has Rename, Duplicate and Archive. An archived template can be restored, or deleted for good once no campaign has been made from it, archived campaigns included.

Every new workspace also gets a published template called Starter newsletter. It uses every field type, so it’s a useful example to open and read.

Opening a template takes you to the full-screen editor.

The left column lists the template’s parts:

  • Full email shows the header, every module in library order and the footer together, as one email.
  • Header and Footer.
  • Module library: every module, in the order marketers will see them. Click Add module to add one. Use a module’s menu to rename, duplicate or delete it, and drag modules to reorder them. You can also reorder with the keyboard.

Dots beside a part show it has problems to fix.

Select a part to edit its HTML. Each part keeps its own undo history, and the editor has find and replace. Turn on Wrap lines from the View menu for long lines.

The centre of the editor shows the email at desktop or mobile width. Hover a part to outline it and click it to open it. An open module previews on its own, inside your header’s <head> and styles, so it looks as it will in a campaign.

The right column is the open part’s form. It has two views:

  • Build is where you add fields, link them to markers, arrange them in groups and change their settings. See Markers and fields.
  • Preview shows the form as a marketer will see it. Fill it in to check every field works. Nothing you type in Preview is saved.
  • Undo and Redo undo whichever kind of change is in view: HTML in the code editor, or form and module changes. Form and module changes keep up to 100 steps.
  • Problems appears when there’s something to fix: amber for warnings, red for errors. Click it for a list by part. Each problem opens the part and field it’s about. See Errors and warnings.
  • The version badge says whether the template is Not published, Published v2, or has Unpublished changes.
  • Publish creates a new version. See Publishing and versions.

The editor saves your draft automatically about a second after you stop typing, and when you leave. Nothing in the draft reaches marketers until you publish.

If someone else saves the same template while you have it open, your next save is refused with a message to reload, so neither of you overwrites the other’s work. Reload to pick up their changes.
