Publishing and versions
Developers work on a template’s draft. Marketers build campaigns from published versions. Publishing turns the current draft into a new version.
Publish a template
Section titled “Publish a template”- Click Publish in the template editor’s top bar. Any unsaved edits are saved first.
- If the template has errors, the dialog lists them, such as “Fix 1 error to publish”. Fix them and try again. Warnings don’t stop you.
- Choose a version number:
- Small change: copy, spacing or a bug fix, such as 1.0 → 1.1.
- Big change: a redesign, or changes to what marketers fill in, such as 1.1 → 2.0.
- Other: any higher number you like, such as 2.0.1. For a template’s first version you choose where the numbering starts.
- Click Publish template. The dialog checks the template once more and publishes it.
Version numbers are one to three whole numbers separated by dots, such as 1, 1.2 or 1.2.3. Each new version must be higher than the last.
The top bar shows where the template stands:
| Badge | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Not published | The template has never been published. Marketers can’t use it yet. |
| Published v2 | The draft matches version 2. |
| Unpublished changes | The draft has edits that aren’t in a version yet. |
What happens to campaigns
Section titled “What happens to campaigns”New campaigns use the template’s latest published version.
Existing campaigns stay on the version they were built with. Publishing never changes a campaign that’s already been made, so an email that’s been reviewed and approved can’t shift underneath your team. If a campaign needs a new module or fix from a later version, create a new campaign from the template.
Published versions never change. If a version has a mistake, fix the draft and publish a new version.
Rename, duplicate and archive
Section titled “Rename, duplicate and archive”From a template card’s menu on the Templates page, or the editor:
- Rename changes the template’s name everywhere. It doesn’t create a version.
- Duplicate copies the template’s draft into a new, unpublished template. Use it to start a variation of a design.
- Archive hides the template from the list and from New campaign. Campaigns already made from it keep working. Show archived templates from the Display menu, and use Restore to bring one back.
- Delete permanently is offered for archived templates once no campaign, archived ones included, was made from them. It can’t be undone.
