Sending test emails

A test email shows you a campaign in real inboxes before you export it. Modular Mail only ever sends tests; your ESP sends the real campaign.

  1. In the campaign editor, click Send test in the top bar.
  2. Under Send to, enter up to 10 email addresses, separated by commas, or pick from Recent, the last 10 addresses you’ve sent tests to in this workspace.
  3. Change the Subject for this test if you like. It starts as the campaign’s subject.
  4. Turn on Add timestamp to add the time to the subject. This stops email clients grouping repeat tests into one conversation.
  5. Click Send test.

The dialog shows each step as it happens: saving your changes, building the email and sending it, with a tick beside each address once it has gone. If a step fails, it says why and offers Try again from that step.

When it’s done, choose Send another or Done. The top bar then shows who the last test went to and when, such as “Test sent to 3 · 14:02”.

  • The subject starts with [MM-TEST] , so tests are easy to spot and filter.
  • The email comes from a Modular Mail test address on test.modular-mail.com.
  • The content is exactly what you’d export: Modular Mail builds the test from the saved campaign, the same way it builds the export.

Merge tags such as {{ first_name }} aren’t filled in: tests arrive with the tags as written, since only your ESP knows your subscribers. To check personalisation, send a test from your ESP too.

Click Check with AI in the test dialog for a quick review of things the template’s checks can’t catch: offers that don’t match across the email, dates that have passed, vague link text such as “click here”, spelling and tone. Each finding links to the field it’s about. See AI help.

To keep test sending reliable for everyone, these limits apply. You won’t see them unless you reach one.

LimitAmount
Addresses per test10
Time between tests5 seconds per person
Per person200 emails an hour and 500 a day, across all workspaces
Per workspace1,000 emails a day

A test that fails doesn’t count towards the limits.

Anyone who can edit campaigns: Owners, Admins, Developers and Marketers. Viewers can’t send tests. Test sending stops when a workspace’s trial ends.

  • Check spam and promotions folders, and search for [MM-TEST].
  • Corporate mail filters sometimes hold mail from new senders. Ask your IT team to allow test.modular-mail.com.
  • Make sure the addresses are spelled correctly. The dialog flags anything that isn’t an email address.
