Filling in content

Click any part of the email, in the preview or the outline, and its form opens in the inspector. Your developer decided which fields each module has, their labels, limits and help text.

A box for words. A multi-line text box lets you press Enter for a new line. If the field has a character limit, a count shows as you type.

A small editor for paragraphs, with bold, italic, bulleted and numbered lists, and links. Your developer’s paragraph and link styles are applied for you, so you can’t change fonts or colours. Character limits count the text you see, not the formatting.

Click the thumbnail to choose an image from the media library, upload one, or paste an image URL. You can also drop a file straight onto the thumbnail. Then:

  • Alt text describes what the image shows, for people using screen readers and for inboxes that block images. Leave it empty for purely decorative images. A sparkle button suggests alt text with AI help.
  • Link (optional), if your developer allowed one, makes the image clickable.

For email, images should be served over https, be JPEG, PNG or GIF, and be under about 1 MB. Modular Mail warns you if one may not work everywhere.

Link text and a URL. Some links are URL only, such as a social icon: you set where it goes and the icon stays as designed.

Links can start with https://, http://, mailto: or tel:, or be a merge tag such as *|ARCHIVE|*. See Merge tags and personalisation.

A colour picker beside a hex value, such as #1f6feb.

Buttons or a dropdown of the options your developer approved, such as alignment, image side or a light or dark style.

A switch that shows or hides an optional part of the module, such as a button. Fields for the hidden part disappear from the form but keep what you typed, so turning the toggle back on brings it back.

A list of items, such as product cards or footer links, shown as a card per item. Open an item to fill in its fields.

  • Add a new item, up to the most allowed.
  • Drag items to reorder them.
  • Duplicate or remove an item from its menu, down to the fewest allowed.

Campaigns save automatically about a second after you stop typing, and when you leave the editor. There’s no save button.

There are no edit locks. If someone else saves the same campaign while you have it open, your next save is refused with “This changed elsewhere, reload.” Reload to see their changes, then carry on.

Comments, reviews and status changes never cause this, so a reviewer commenting doesn’t interrupt you.

Undo and redo cover every change in the campaign: content, modules added, removed or moved, and settings. They keep up to 100 steps, and typing in one field is one step until you pause.

UndoCmd+ZCtrl+Z
RedoShift+Cmd+ZShift+Ctrl+Z or Ctrl+Y

The shortcuts work inside text boxes too. Undoing a change opens the part it was in, so you can see what changed.

Modular Mail checks each field against your template’s rules as you work:

  • Required fields left empty show “Fill this in.”
  • Character limits: text over the limit shows, for example, “Keep this to 80 characters.”
  • Repeaters need at least their fewest items.
  • Values that can’t be used, such as a link with an unsafe URL, are left out of the email and reported.

Each field shows its problem underneath, and a red dot marks the part in the outline. Fields hidden by a toggle aren’t checked.

Problems never stop you sending a test or exporting, but the export dialog lists them so you can decide.

If your workspace has a Shopify store or WordPress site connected, you can fill modules by picking a product or post instead of typing. See Filling from products and posts.
