Errors and warnings
The template editor checks your HTML and form as you work. Problems come in two kinds:
- Errors would break the email or the form. You can’t publish until they’re fixed.
- Warnings are unfinished work, such as a marker that doesn’t have a field yet. You can publish with them, so an urgent fix to one module never waits for a half-built module elsewhere.
The Problems button in the top bar shows how many there are, amber for warnings and red for errors. Click it for a list grouped by part. Click a problem to open its part and field. Dots on the outline and on form rows show where problems are.
Errors
Section titled “Errors”| Problem | What it means and how to fix it |
|---|---|
| ”…” isn’t a marker name. | Marker names start with a letter and use only letters, digits, - and _. Rename the marker. |
| The marker ”…” is used more than once. | Marker names must be unique within a part. Rename one of them. |
The <tag> marked ”…” needs a closing </tag>. | A marked element must be closed so Modular Mail knows where it ends. Add the closing tag. |
An image field goes on an <img>; ”…” is a <tag>. | Move the marker to the <img>, or change the field’s type. |
A link field goes on an <a>; ”…” is a <tag>. | Move the marker to the <a>, or change the field’s type. |
Rich text is paragraphs, so its marker goes on a <td> or <div>; ”…” is a <tag>. | Put the marker on the cell or <div> around the paragraphs, not on a <p> or heading. |
A <tag> can’t hold text. | A text field is on a void element such as <img> or <br>. Move the marker. |
| ”…” has markers inside it, which its content would replace. | A text or rich text field would overwrite other marked elements inside it. Move the marker to an element with no markers inside, or remove the inner markers. |
| ”…” is filled by more than one field. | Two fields use the same marker. Point one of them at a different marker. |
| ”…” isn’t inside the repeater ”…”. | An item field’s marker must be inside the repeater’s element. Move the marker or the field. |
| ”…” is inside the repeater ”…”. Add its field to the repeater. | A field outside the repeater uses a marker inside it. Move the field into the repeater. |
| A repeater can’t be inside another repeater. | Repeaters can’t be nested. Use a separate module or a fixed layout instead. |
| Its minimum number of items is more than its maximum. | Lower the repeater’s Fewest items or raise its Most items. |
| Choose a default option. | A choice needs a default option for new modules. Pick one. |
Warnings
Section titled “Warnings”| Problem | What it means |
|---|---|
| The marker ”…” has no field yet. | The element keeps its content and can’t be edited. Add a field, or remove the marker if it isn’t needed. |
| It has no marker yet. | The field doesn’t fill anything. Pick or type a marker in its settings. |
| There’s no marker ”…” in the HTML yet. | Add data-mm="…" to the element the field should fill. The field’s settings have a copy button. |
”…” has formatting inside it (<tag>), which the marketer’s text will replace. Use rich text to keep formatting. | A text or link field’s element contains tags such as <span> or <strong>. They’ll be lost once the marketer types. Move the style onto the marked element or switch to rich text. |
| Its options don’t set anything yet. | A choice has no targets. Add a style or attribute under Sets. |
| It doesn’t remove or hide anything yet. | A toggle has nothing to do. Add markers to remove or fields to hide. |
| It hides a field that isn’t in the form. | A toggle points at a field or group that was deleted. Remove it from Hides in the form. |
| It has no fields yet. | A repeater has no item fields. Add some with Add field to repeater. |
If the workspace has integrations, you may also see a warning that a field’s product or post mapping is no longer offered by the connected site. Choose another mapping or remove it.
